| Cluster Short Definition: A mountain with a prominence of at least 300m, and all of the lesser prominence peaks that go to it within 5 km. Discussion: The purpose of the cluster concept is to be able to hide the detail of certain areas when at a high level. For example, when looking a list of mountains within a region, it is helpful to only show the main landmarks, rather than every little subpeak. The subpeaks are visible as soon as you go to the mountain page. We use the terms "cluster master" for the highest peak and "cluster members" for the subpeaks. Cluster members were sometimes referred to as "subpeaks", but this term is being increasingly avoided, due to various other meanings people have attached to it. Usage: The Tantalus cluster includes Zenith, Serratus and so on, which are nearby, but does not include everything in the Tantalus Range, or the Tantalus Region. Usefulness: We needed a term for a group of subpeaks around a major peak. |
