On December 15, 1989 a KLM Boeing 747 airliner on a flight from Amsterdam to Anchorage flew right through the volcanic ash emitted by Mount Redoubt. Ash sucked into the turbines caused all four engines as well as the standby electrical generator to shut down. The pilot glided the plane down to an elevation below the ash cloud and then managed to restart all engines.
