The Black Tusk is an old volcano. The neck of the volcano has been eroded away and the summit of the Black Tusk is actually the top edge of a lava flow that came out of the original summit vent and flowed to the south. Just to the right of the skier is Tantalus mountain.

than the clouds in this picture. As a matter of fact, we believe that the ice was probably in the order of 2000 metres deep, and only a few craggy peaks, such as the Black Tusk and Mts. Tantalus and Dione, were high enough to be visible above the ice.
