The Black Tusk is the only part still standing of what used to be a much larger volcano that eroded away. The lighter terrain in front of The Black Tusk contains a trail (visible if you look closely) that leads to below the step on the southwest ridge (left skyline). The standard route to the summit The Black Tusk involves scrambling up a gully in this step. The character in the foreground is Jim Elson who still owes me $5.

Access: To reach Gentian Peak, hike up the Garibaldi Lake trail from Rubble Creek parking lot. Take the left fork at 6 km and continue past Taylor Meadows campground to the base of Panorama Ridge. Follow the ridge crest to Gentian Peak.
